Bonds's resurgence
Barry Bonds, SF NL, ended his 0-for-21 slump with a vengeance yesterday, putting together the following plate appearances:
Homer, single, walk, homer
Many players have broken out of an 0-for-20 or worse slump with three straight hits, but it's not as common for those three hits to include a pair of long-balls.
The last guy to do that before Bonds was:
Preston Wilson, FLA NL: from 6/2-6/11/2002, Wilson went 0-for-26. On June 12, 2002, he started by going homer, homer, single to end his long hitless streak.
Since he went 3-for-3 with a walk yesterday, Bonds can attempt to match Edgar Renteria's, ATL NL, streak from last season:
Aug 11-Aug 17 (thru second PA) : Renteria went 0-for-24; he immediately followed that up with single, single, single, double, walk, single to end that long 0-fer.
....so Renteria busted out of his 0-for-24 slump with five straight hits, plus a walk to make it six straight times on base.
By the way, this makes the 293rd game in Bonds's career in which he's reached base safely 4 or more times. He's got a huge lead on any other active player in that category:
Games reaching base safely 4+ times, active players
293-Barry Bonds
181-Frank Thomas
160-Gary Sheffield
152-Craig Biggio
138-Chipper Jones
136-Ken Griffey
134-Jim Thome
131-Manny Ramirez
131-Alex Rodriguez
...and guess how many such games Babe Ruth had in his career? That's right, exactly 293.
